Good Friday - Walk of Witness
(Church)
Jesus is condemned to death - Matthew 27: 20-23 and 26
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered. "What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!" "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
"Let him who is without guilt cast the first stone…"
Lord, teach us not to harbour any unkind thoughts towards others. We understand so little and our judgement will almost always be biased by motives of jealousy, greed or pride.
Help us, instead to recognise our own faults by allowing us to see ourselves as others see us, and especially as we are seen by you. And then grant us the strength, to replace our shortcomings with meekness and generosity of spirit.

The cross is laid on Jesus - Matthew 27: 27-31
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me."
To deny ourselves is to disown ourselves as the centre of our existence. No-one lives a life completely unmarked by pain or tribulation or sorrow or hardship – in mind or body. Christ – fully human – bore the burden of his cross physically for all to see, showing that there is nothing which he has not endured before us.
Lord, help us to know that it is in the darkness of sorrow and pain we seek and find the light of truth, and in the chill of loneliness and despair we can draw close to the warm flame of your love for us.

Jesus falls the first time - Hebrews 2: 17-18
For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Throughout his life on earth Jesus tirelessly forgave sins and made people whole.
As we repeatedly stumble and fall from the same weaknesses we may have had for years, may we know that God will never abandon us – it is we who abandon him.
Lord heal us, and help us not to be too proud to ask forgiveness of those we have hurt. Teach us to persevere when we fall away from grace again and again. Let us draw from your mercy the strength to defeat our weaknesses.

Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry his cross - Matthew 27: 32
As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.
Lord it isn't always easy to see where help is needed. Teach us that to concentrate on our own problems is to close our eyes to the often greater burdens of family, friends – and strangers. Help us to be less self-absorbed; Enable us to see how we may lighten the load of others – and thereby shoulder a small part of the weight of your cross.

Jesus falls for the second time - Isaiah 53: 5-6
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Christ the man, exhausted and aching in every limb and sinew, falls a second time, but again gets up and struggles on.
To fall is human; to get up again we need divine help. God will always welcome back the sinner, who having fallen overcomes pride and recognises our total dependence on our creator and reaches out for the help and strength of forgiveness.
Lord, take our hands in yours, help us up. If we manage one small faltering step towards you, in your great love you will come out to meet us.
Lord in your mercy

Jesus speaks to the women of Jerusalem -
Luke 23: 27-29A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!'
How hard it must have been to look on the flogged and bleeding figure of Jesus as he struggled under the weight of his cross and not weep.
Yet our Lord was not moved by self-pity, but pity for the suffering destined for his people; pity for the sufferings man would inflict upon man.
It is all too easy to weep for ourselves, blurring our sight of how the wrongs we have done have brought pain and disappointment to our loving Father.
Lord, teach us to turn our tears of self-pity into tears of shame for the agony we have caused you; lead us to make positive changes in ourselves, to remove those things which hurt you, so that our tears may be changed to joy as we feel your presence in our souls and in our lives.
Lord in your mercy

Jesus falls for the third time - 1 Peter 2: 22-24
"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. "He himself bore our sins" in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; "by his wounds you have been healed."
At the third fall surely it is nearly over. Surely Jesus cannot drag himself up again. And yet he does. Do we?
Jesus taught us that there is no end to our Father's mercy as long as we keep on trying, keep on turning to him for help.
Lord, heal us of all the insults that have crippled us. Help us, Lord to be gentle with others.

Jesus is stripped of his garments - John 19: 23-24When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. "Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, "They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment." So this is what the soldiers did.
The final indignity – to stand naked before a jeering rabble. Stared at by eyes that were too blind to see the truth.
Beloved Lord, nothing we do escapes your notice. You see us as we are and you see the potential you created in us. Help us to become the person you want us to be.

Jesus is nailed to the cross - Luke 23: 33-34
When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."
For all the pain we have caused him, still his love makes excuses for us.
The cross on which Jesus hung is the most powerful image in the history of humanity. The simplicity of two pieces of wood belying the complexity of its meaning for us. To gaze on it is to see the pain, the burdens, the rejection, the injustice which our Lord bore for the love of us; it's to see the ultimate sacrifice; it's to see the way, the truth – and the hope of glorious eternal life.
Lord, help us to know that to share with Christ in his glory we also have to endure a share of his suffering. We who are the cause of it.

Jesus dies on the cross - Luke 23: 44-46
It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last.
It is over. There must be some relief as the agony stops. To those at the foot of the cross this must have been its bleakest hour. How would they manage? Why should they even bother? What had it all been for?
Lord, we know that your death was not the end. As those whom we love reach the end of their lives on earth, grant that they may soon be with you in perfect peace and happiness and grant us the consolation that comes from faith and trust in your mercy.
Lord in your mercy

Jesus is taken down from the cross - John 19: 32-34, 38
The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away.
Our thoughts turn to Mary and the other women who loved Jesus. What was there to say? What words of consolation could they offer one another as they tenderly took the bruised lifeless corpse down from the cross? Mary, there to the end, bravely hugs the marble cold body of her son to herself. It is over, he has gone. A sword pierced her soul.
Lord, sometimes it is hard to see why things happen. Tragic heart – breaking things which happen to good people, to children, to the vulnerable – and the world asks 'Why?
Help us to learn how to accept what we don't understand and to trust, to be still and know that God is always near. Console us in our grief and save us from despair.

Jesus is laid in the tomb - John 19: 40-42
Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
Lord there will be times when we have to stand up against the majority, speak out against the popular principles of an immoral society which has rejected the notion of self-denial and lives only for self-gratification.
It might not be easy to stand out from the crowd, it might make no difference to anyone, but may we never deny what we know to be true from trying to follow your teaching, and your way of the cross.

MISSION OF THE MONTH – MAY
MERCY SHIPS.
The missions supported by All Saints Church are not chosen at random, but are ones in which a member or members of the congregation have an interest. This applies to Mercy Ships, an organisation formed in 1978, and based in Garden Valley, Texas. The organisation is international and faith-based, with a mission to increase access to health care throughout the world. The organisation currently has one ship in service, the 16,500 ton Africa Mercy, at present based in the port of Conakry, Guinea. This ship, and other smaller ones that have been in service, principally in the West Indies, is used to transform individuals and serve nations, one at a time. Through the deployment of the Africa Mercy, Mercy Ships works with host nations to help fill in the gaps in health care, while serving the immediate needs of the population.
Staffed by volunteers, Mercy Ships offers an unrivalled platform for training and gaining experience in both medical and non-medical matters. The Africa Mercy is well equipped to deal with medical incidents, up to and including severe operations, and treatment is free. As a Christian charity, Mercy Ships freely serves the poor without regard to race, gender or religion.

The Aldhelm Cross
The Bishop of Salisbury will award a number of St Aldhelm Crosses during the 5.30pm Evensong at Salisbury Cathedral on Saturday 25 May.
Recipients include our very own Mr Barry Smith, the Burbage Church Life Co-ordinator.
The St Aldhelm Cross, an award created in 2005, is an engraved silver lapel cross given to lay people (non-ordained) who are nominated in recognition of their outstanding contributions to church life in the Diocese over a number of years.
The Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam, said, "We treasure those who selflessly give their gifts, time and efforts way beyond the call of duty. Without their contributions, our Diocese would be a poorer place, and so these awards are richly deserved as a token of thanks from the whole Diocese."
If you'd like to join Barry and all the others, to celebrate this award, the service again is the 25th May, 5.30pm at Salisbury Cathedral.
Well done Barry from all at All Saints Church!
Peter Devenish will co-ordinate transport to the Cathedral and will have a list at the back of Church for people to put their names on.
