Easter

With Christmas behind us we now look forward to Easter which starts with Ash Wednesday when we have a service of Holy Communion at 9.30am just before Scamps. We will be having Lent Lunches in St Andrew's as usual, with the proceeds going to a charity, starting on 29th February - so please come along and join us for a mug of soup and some bread.

Team Rector interviews

An advert has gone out for the post of Team Rector and shortlisting will take place at the end of February with the interviews being held shortly afterwards. Please remember our own vicar now has 11 parishes to look after in the Savernake Team alone and she has responsibilities in the rest of the Pewsey Deanery too - so bear with her if she seems a tad over stretched - it is because she is! If the Churchwardens can help you, or a Lay Pastoral Assistant assist, just ask one of us - Churchwardens - Julian Price (850283) or Mike Cox (850360) and Lay Pastoral Assistants - Mike and Anna Cox.

SCAMPS

The fortnightly SCAMPS schedule are back in full swing. SCAMPS is a group of mainly young Mums (but Dad's, Grandparents and/or Carers are welcome too) who come along with their small children and enjoy a cup of coffee and chat. For those slightly older children we usually have a craft type activity for them to do along with Mum. So if you have a young baby and would like to come along you will be most welcome. February's meetings will be on 8th and 22nd.

Afternoon Teas

A big thank you to Marion for organising the Rotary Shelterbox speaker at the January Afternoon Teas session - it reminds us all how fortunate we are that we have four walls, fresh clean water and all our 'mod cons' to use. It was well attended and between teas, raffles and 'bring and buy' £180 was raised for this charity.

There will be no afternoon teas during February or March due to the Lent Lunches.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting 15th April 2012

Our annual meeting will be held on 15th April after the evening service. Prior to the start of this meeting the Churchwardens election takes place - nominations need to be with the vicar prior to the start of the evening service. During the meeting the reports on the year's events are given and the members of the Parocial Church Council for the following year will be elected. Nomination forms for churchwardens and PCC members will be in the church in due course.

If you would like to become a member of the Church Electoral roll and have a say on the church's life and help to take the church foward, there are electoral roll forms in church for you to complete.

Looking forward to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics

This year celebrates both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the beginning of June and the London Olympics towards the end of July. St Andrew's will be contributing to both events - the Diamond Jubilee celebrations on the Recreation Ground on 2nd June and a rock an pop event on the Recreation Ground on 20th July to mark the start of the Olympic Prelim week. All help, ideas and any other contributions welcome - let's make it a real celebration to remember (not often folk get a Diamond Jubilee and a UK Olympic games in the same year - I for one can't remember either of them happening in my lifetime, let alone together). So, put the dates in your diary now.

Confirmations on Saturday 7th January

Four of our members joined in with many others from all over the Diocese at Salisbury Cathedral when the Bishop of Salisbury confirmed them into the Church.

This was a very moving and very personal service considering the number of people who were confirmed.

Congratulations and welcome to Carol, Phyllis, Sarah and Vicky.

Christmas happenings at St Andrew's

The coming of Christmas was a busy and happy time at St Andrew's. It seemed to start back in November when the school children made figures and sheep for the Nativity scene.

Brass & Carols 22nd December

Again we enjoyed an evening of Brass and Carols when Pheonix Brass came a played outside on the Memorial Green while the more hardy of us braved the inclement weather and sang carols while enjoying mulled wine and hot chestnuts.

Our thanks to Pheonix Brass Band who provided us with the music.

Many drivers slowed down when they passed our gathering.

Thanks also to our mulled wine expert for giving us a cup of delicious warm wine.

And of course our 'Come to Bethlehem' Service for all the family. Once again the church was packed as the story of that first Christmas told.

Young shepherds watching their sheep were surprised by the angels who appeared in front of them telling them to go to Bethlehem. The wise men, only two this year, came from afar to see this babe that people were talking about.

And then at last the shepherds, sheep, donkey, angels, and wise men cam and saw our baby wrapped in shawls and lying in his basket.

The Christingles were distributed and lit, the lights in church went out as we sang our last carol by candlelight.

The collection from this service as always went to the Church of England Children's Society.

We would like to thank everyone for coming and making it another great success and especially all those who came suitably dressed for that first Christmas. We would also like to thank all those who helped decorate the church, helped with the refreshments and tidying up the church afterwards for the Midnight service.
